How to Decorate Your Bathroom with Plants

Many people who live in apartments or condominiums do not have access to outdoor space. It can be difficult to find a way to incorporate plants into the decor of these spaces, but there are plenty of creative ways that you can use plants in your bathroom! Here are some ideas.

Pick plants that love humidity

Some plants like any conditions, others are more specific and have particular requirements. When choosing plants for the bathroom, it is a good idea to look for tropical plants that love humidity because bathrooms are warm and wet.  Or to look at air plants that don’t need deep root systems.

A few examples of this kind of plant include:

  • Peace lilies
  • Philodendrons
  • English ivy
  • Anthuriums

Keep plants in clear containers with drainage holes and add a layer of rocks or pebbles to the bottom. You can also include charcoal pieces which will help filter out any toxins that might be in the water, such as chlorine from tap water. This will also keep the roots of your plant from sitting in water.

Put plants on a tray that can be filled with pebbles and water once or twice a week to mimic how they would get watered outside. This method is great for low-maintenance plants, but you should check often to make sure there is always some water at the bottom of the tray. This method is especially good for plants that like it moist but not wet, such as African violets or succulents.

Choose plants that are low maintenance for more of a “natural” look. A few examples include:

  • Spider plant
  • Snake plant
  • Philodendrons

Pothos (also called devil’s ivy or variegated philodendron)

Pick high moisture air-loving plants for areas where there is no window or natural light. Some good options are:

  • Peace lilies
  • African violets
  • Orchids

Create a window garden by hanging plants from hooks or stands. You can also find kits that allow you to attach several planters on the outside of your shower door for this purpose. The great thing about these types of gardens is how easy they are to maintain. Just remember to choose plants that are tolerant of heat and humidity.

Mix together a few different kinds of plants for an interesting look, or keep it simple with just one kind. You can do whatever you have time for!

Keep in mind how much light each plant needs when arranging them so they don’t grow out of its space too quickly

Where you can add plants in a bathroom

The next thing to consider is where to put plants in a bathroom. These spaces don’t always have the biggest free areas but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some clever places you can put plants, especially when you have ones with shallow roots.

A few simple examples include:

  • Bathroom windowsill
  • Shower caddy or bathtub ledge
  • Inside the shower to help prevent mold and mildew build up around your shampoo bottles, soap dispensers, etc.
  • Next to a towel rack in plain sight when you enter the bathroom for an extra pop of color!

Add houseplants to the shower

The right type of plant can make all the difference in how you feel when you are taking a shower! No matter how small your bathroom space is, there are plenty of ways to decorate with plants

Replace the plastic plants in fake flower arrangements with real ones. Keep them fresh by misting or submerging their roots once a week. You can also put decorative shells, stones, or pieces of driftwood inside the vase instead!

Use small planters as soap dishes for guests to place their soap on when they are done showering.

If you want to keep it simple, just use a large planter with the soil and plant of your choice! You can then set this pot on top of or next to your sink for an elegant way to bring nature into the bathroom.
